Body Heart-Body Smart Introduction
Being fat, no matter if you define it by an extra 20lbs or 300lbs, changes who you are. It masks
your real self. It holds you back from participating in life. It covers the body, giving you rolls
and creases, making bones indistinguishable from puffy flesh. But more than losing your shape,
I think being fat makes you lose your spirit. It holds you back from living the life you were
meant to have.
Though the Body Heart–Body Smart weight loss program is new to you, it’s something I’ve
been living for the past 12 years. I was a tall, skinny little girl and started gaining weight in high
school, keeping it on through college and my twenties. I don’t know my top weight. I was too
embarrassed to get on a scale, but I can tell you my pant size was a 16-18.
I — probably much like you, prayed, wished, hoped for a miracle to lose the weight and like
myself again. I never looked at myself in a full length mirror. I wouldn’t dare wear a bathing
suit. I tried every diet. I bought every magazine that promised a “new you”. Nothing worked.
There was no miracle. The weight came off slowly as new habits formed — like walking, eating
better, becoming more conscious of how I felt. Most importantly, I became unwilling to live as
a fat person any longer. I wanted to feel better, leaner, healthier. I gave up the excuses and the
lousy food.
I now tell folks that I found my grace and Body Heart in my old fat. Today I’m a personal
trainer who owns a ladies-only fitness studio. I’m devoted to helping women and girls boost
their health and their self image. I don’t come to you as a skinny gal who’s never hurt over a fat
body. I’m a former big girl who knows what it feels like to live in a body that spurs shame and
resentment. I get it.
The Body Heart-Body Smart weight loss plan was born — not as another get thin quick scheme,
those never work over a few weeks let alone over the course of a lifetime. This is a framework
for a powerful lifestyle transformation. If we can convince ourselves to overeat, we can
convince ourselves to eat well, respect and appreciate our body for what it is and what it does for
us. If there are two ends to the spectrum, doesn’t it make sense that we can heal our bodies with
food or destroy them with food?
The Body Heart-Body Smart program offers a way to eat and move that will help you lose
weight — but more importantly, help you to be in health, to be strong, lean and energized
emotionally and physically.
This program is my story and my hope is that it will provide you with some inspiration, support,
camaraderie, and a sound plan to help you along your way to a healthier life and a leaner body.
People successfully lose weight and work out for different reasons: Sometimes it’s a health
crisis, sometimes it’s a friend or coworker that inspires us. Some folks turn to God, medical
studies, fad diets.... Maybe it’s just a New Year’s resolution that has gone right. Whatever the
reason, let’s just begin here.
Hearts,
Joan Upton
